With the dust having settled on our first season as naming rights sponsor of the DBL Sharks Sheffield, our managing director David Clarkson shares his thoughts on a 2016/17 season which brought about a top-four finish for the club.

“It’s safe to say we’ve absolutely loved our first season as naming rights sponsor of the DBL Sharks Sheffield.

“What a roller-coaster ride it’s been! From tip-off against Leicester Riders in the first game to the nail-biting finale against Worcester Wolves in the play-off quarter-final, it’s been an exhilarating ride and we already can’t wait to see what the next few months bring.

“An attribute often crucial in sport is the ability to overcome adversity through sheer grit and determination – and head coach Atiba Lyons and his players have shown that in bucketloads in the last seven months or so.

“To overcome so many injuries and changes in personnel and still manage to finish in the top four of the British Basketball League table was a tremendous achievement, and the side came mightily close to toppling one of the league’s in-form sides, Worcester Wolves, in the last eight of the BBL Play-Offs.

“I also have to say that the atmosphere at our home venue, the English Institute of Sport Sheffield has been electric at times this season.

“There were so many highlights – the comeback win against ESH Group Eagles Newcastle, for example, which saw an incredible 21-0 scoring run take the DBL Sharks past the league’s second-placed side, or Colin Sing’s on-the-final-buzzer winner against Cheshire Phoenix over the Christmas period.

“And something that’s come to my mind watching the DBL Sharks this season is the unity of the crowd who go to see the side week-in, week-out. This city is so often so divided by other sports – most notably football – but once you step through the doors of EIS Sheffield, all other agendas are forgotten.

“The tribal atmosphere of the city’s football rivalry is put to one side and we can all get together to support a sports team which brings so much to our community.

“And what we can say for certain is that the DBL Sharks will come back even stronger next season. It’s an exciting time to be a Shark – in the near future, the club will have moved to their new home at the Park Community Arena on the 35-acre Olympic Legacy Park, Sheffield (OLP).

“The OLP will bring so much to the city and will provide the DBL Sharks with an arena of their own.

“We’re extremely excited for what the future holds for the DBL Sharks Sheffield and already can’t wait for 2017/18 to start. Let’s go #SharkNation!”
